When to go to Budapest

Thermal baths, ruin bars and a Danube skyline built for sunset.

Budapest splits along the Danube into hilly, castle-topped Buda and flat, grand Pest, with thermal baths fed by natural hot springs sitting alongside candlelit ruin bars in abandoned buildings. It's one of Europe's best-value capitals for food, nightlife and architecture.

How long to stay

3–5 days is the sweet spot.

Flight time

About 9.5h from the US East Coast, 1.5h from Europe, 7.5h from South Asia.

Good to know

  • A Budapest Card pays off if you're visiting several baths and museums; otherwise single transit tickets are cheap.
  • Bring or rent a swimsuit and towel for the thermal baths; lockers need a small deposit.
  • Ruin bars get very crowded and touristy on weekends — a weeknight visit is more relaxed.
