When to go to Grand Canyon

A mile deep and ten miles across, and every viewpoint still surprises you.

The South Rim is open year-round and easy to see in two days: rim walks, sunrise and sunset viewpoints and a short taste of the inner canyon. Go early or late in the day, and carry more water than you think.

How long to stay

2–4 days is the sweet spot.

Flight time

About 4.5h from the US East Coast, 10.5h from Europe, 19h from South Asia.

Good to know

  • Never hike to the river and back in a day; at least two-thirds of rescues are people underestimating the climb back out.
  • The park shuttle is free and usually faster than driving between South Rim viewpoints.
  • Book lodging inside the park up to a year ahead, or stay in Tusayan, Williams or Flagstaff.
