When to go to Kerala Backwaters & Kochi

Palm-lined backwaters, spice ports and slow houseboat afternoons.

Kerala moves at the pace of its backwaters: a houseboat drifting through palm-fringed canals, tea estates climbing into cool hills, and Fort Kochi's spice-trade history layered under Portuguese, Dutch and British facades. It's the most relaxed corner of South India, built for slowing down rather than checking off sights.

How long to stay

5–7 days is the sweet spot.

Flight time

About 18h from the US East Coast, 10h from Europe, 2.5h from South Asia.

Good to know

  • Book a houseboat with a private cabin and reviews, not just the cheapest jetty tout offers.
  • Monsoon (June–August) is lush and much cheaper, but rain can cancel backwater and hill plans for a day at a time.
  • Choose a doctor-run Ayurvedic centre over a hotel spa if you want an authentic treatment, not just a massage.
