When to go to San Juan, Puerto Rico

Spanish forts, salsa clubs and a rainforest, all a US flight away.

San Juan pairs a walled 500-year-old colonial old town with resort beaches and the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system just outside city limits. No passport or currency exchange needed for US travelers, which keeps the logistics simple.

Good to know

  • Old San Juan's adoquine streets are pretty but rough on ankles — wear real shoes, not sandals.
  • Hurricane season runs June–November, peaking August–October; the island still gets occasional power outages during storms.
  • A rental car is worth it for El Yunque and Fajardo's bio bay; Old San Juan and Condado are easily walkable or a short taxi apart.
